DIY Distressed Jeans

One of my favorite pair of jeans are my Wranglers. I got them years ago when I worked at Century 21. They were on sale, in my size, and I immediately snatched them off the rack. I wore them a lot and the knees started to get worn in so I stopped rocking them. I recently decided to turn them into a nice ripped up, distressed pair of jeans. I've made denim shorts many times from old pairs, but I never kept the length and added some rips and tears before. I decided to take some pictures and give some tips on how I transformed my regular denim to distressed denim.

Before Picture :)

Here are the tools I used. I used a pencil to shade where I wanted the holes to go. I kept the jeans on and made marks where I felt like the best places were to rip up. A scissor, obviously, to cut the fabric. You could use a nail to distress the fabric, but I just used the scissor for that part. I used the needle more than the tweezer to pick out the strands in the cuts.

First, I took the scissor and cut a little hole going horizontal with the waistband. I could go into the twill weave, weft and warps, but let's keep my FIT education out of it. I'll just use easy, simple explanations and save the textile lesson for another post :)

I then took that little slit and ripped a bigger hole. Now you can see those white threads (weft :P) and those are what you'll need to pull out. That's where I used the needle to make this easier.

It will start to look like this.

If you turn the denim over and look on the inside, you'll get a better look at the thread. The white lines are what you want to pull out to create a ripped look.

This is where I used the scissor to distress the denim. I just ran it across as if I was using a straight razor.

I repeated the steps above and made the rips close together. This way when I pull the white threads, I can cover a larger area and work faster.

So this is the after picture! I only did one leg because this does take time and I will finish later on. I am definitely going to add more rips and holes to this pair. Once I finish, I'll throw them in the wash to make the rips more worn in.

Here is a close up shot. Pretty cool!

Good luck and have fun tearing up your old jeans!
